Les Puces

The first time I was in Paris last year with Tom and we went to Les Puces (the fleas) Market we spent a few hours wandering around and he said to me ‘You really need to come here with your girlfriends.’ Nearly a year later I was lucky enough to do that.

The girls and I had a beautiful day wandering through the curiosities of the world’s biggest flea market.

I’m always amazed at how many beautiful things there are in the world that have a history and are sustainable. There is more magic in vintage and second hand goods than could ever be found in mass produced modern goods. Every time I find another amazing item from the past that is not contributing to the mass produced, consumerist crap we are surrounded by I wonder why I continue to buy from these huge chain stores. I certainly can’t be all high and mighty and claim that I never buy something because it’s incredibly cheap and I ‘need’ it. I want to move towards a more conscious way of living, of being aware of what I’m purchasing and try to do my part to step back and take myself out of the wasteful cycle that is so easy to get sucked into. I think it’s something I need to gently remind myself of often. Perhaps you will help to remind me of these thoughts next time H&M are having a sale?

Hey Trudy, cool post -love the pictures, and I say “Amen” to your last paragraph. I am much more likely to buy second-hand stuff because to me, that means it has been tested -I can read wether it has made it through the last 20 years and won’t give up yet or if it’s going to stay with me for just another season, and that’s it -and I like that. I also like finding stuff -I never know what I am going to discover, and actually often I don’t even buy anything but usually at least one object has made me smile while I was browsing. But I am also definitely guilty of loving dollar stores, although it got a bit better. I find the more I read about consumerism, minimalism, planned obsolescence; hell, even Feng Shui:), the more I’m moving towards a consumer behaviour I can actually support. Flea markets I totally support:) Have not been to a Parisian one yet, but do recommend Berlin (week-ends at ‘Unter den Linden’, next to the art market)! Greetinx from la belle France*Vera

      Hi!

I know, I have all these grand plans to support a sustainable way of life – to not buy more crap that I don’t need and the world doesn’t need to produce then I see something really cheap…. I need to keep working on it! xx
