Sliedrecht – Tom’s heritage and some lovely family time.
Goedemiddag from snowy Rotterdam!
Tom and I got back from a very lovely few days in London last night and I have many, many photos to share but they are still in the ‘yet to be edited’ pile so I’m going back to a few weeks before Christmas when we spent the day in Sliedrecht with Tom’s side of the family.
Laura’s (Tom’s Mum) family have been in Sliedrecht for many years now. Martin and Michelle took us for a walk around the older part of the city and showed us the buildings where Laura, her parents and even her grandparents were born! They are amongst these pictures however I have to admit I forget which buildings are which, you are just going to have to believe me!
Sliedrecht is a lovely little village, quite a bit bigger than Hoornaar but with still a distinctive Dutch Village feel. I absolutely adore the pride that the Dutch have in their homes and the displays they have in their windows. I kept asking Michelle if they were houses as the window displays were like something you would see in a funky little gift shop in New Farm!

Fiets on the train from Rotterdam.

Tom and Martin wandering the little streets.

The details!

The street that one of the family was born on (perhaps Tom’s Oma?) & cousins!

So bloody cute.

Spot the blue car & the right reminds me of something my Mum would do.

Christmas preparations!

Sliedrecht harbour and Tom with his Great-Aunt, his Oma’s sister who gave us lovely SinterKlass gifts. Hopefully as time progresses we can communicate more with her as our Dutch improves. For both of us I think it is so lovely to have a Dutch Oma here.

Hopefully we will actually get to do some skating this weekend with the way the weather is headed. Love that these are used as decorations.

Cute Winter moments.

Kerst (Christmas) preparations!
Being here and seeing these places where our families lived and loved is something that I am really loving about being here in Holland. Last week I went to Barendrecht for the day and saw the house that my Dad was born in, I will have to share that soon as well! That ‘yet to be edited’ pile of photos is growing by the day!
This afternoon I’m drinking my organic green chai tea while watching the snow fall like icing sugar from the sky. It’s only light but it’s starting to settle and the cars on our street are starting to get a beautiful white blanket. Tonight we are heading out for our Dutch lessons which without me having a bike is going to be a bit of a walk. Hopefully if it’s not too slippery Tommy can skate and I can ride his bike. Being without a fiets is certainly going to make it hard to get around, it’s such an innate sense of life here.
Again, nice
I love that window with the photo display and white door/window frame and pot plant. lovely! Why are you without your bike dear?
